Artist Concept:
"Dinner at Dusk" is a vivid exploration of light, texture, and narrative, centred around a Tui crafted from meticulously arranged mirror fragments. Each piece of the mirror is carefully selected to capture and reflect light, bringing the bird to life in a way that transforms throughout the day, depending on the time and lighting conditions. The background, created with oil and resin, evokes the richness and depth of a twilight sky, transitioning from the vibrant hues of sunset to the deeper tones of nightfall. This backdrop not only provides a striking contrast to the mirrored Tui but also enhances the sense of movement and vitality within the piece. Encircling the composition is a border inspired by the bold, eclectic aesthetic of the 1960s, made from glass and ceramic beads sourced from a beautiful collection of costume jewellery, sustainably gifted by a community member from her mother's estate. At the heart of the narrative is the Tui, having captured her dinner, preparing to retreat to her evening roost, embodying a sense of peace and satisfaction. "Dinner at Dusk" invites viewers to pause and reflect on the beauty of everyday moments and the intricate interplay between light, nature, and time.

Dinner At Dusk
My Shiny Perspective:
Ah, "Dinner at Dusk" – where a Tui knows that timing is everything, especially when you’re dining on the fly! Picture this: the Tui is out for an evening meal, basking in the last rays of sunlight (Who needs UberEats when you can catch your own?). The background is the sky's way of saying, "Goodnight!" while still showing off with some dramatic flair. And let’s not forget the border – a playful nod to the 1960s with its glitzy beads and chunky jewellery, because even in a rush, this Tui knows how to accessorise! This piece is all about catching that perfect bite with style and shimmer before bedtime. "Kia reka te kai, manu iti!" (Enjoy your meal, little bird!)
