Artist Concept:
In this series, I explore the beauty and resilience found in repurposing forgotten materials. "Back Up Bird, with Her Sunglass Wings" is the second piece in this journey, capturing the essence of flight and freedom. Each element of this artwork has been carefully chosen and reimagined to create a vibrant and dynamic visual experience. The canvas itself is a testament to transformation, layered with oil and resin to play with light in a unique way. As light interacts with the surface, the colours either dim or shimmer, inviting the viewer to see the piece from different perspectives. The bird's wings, made from broken mirrors and old nail polish, reflect a spectrum of bright, vibrant colours, embodying a sense of movement and life. Incorporating tiny slices of metallics for the trunk, repurposed from the dried paint on my drop sheet, adds another layer of depth and texture. This approach not only gives new life to discarded materials but also challenges me to see the potential in every piece. The meticulous arrangement of glass pieces, without cutting them, speaks to my dedication to the process and the patience required to let the materials guide the final form. "Back Up Bird, with Her Sunglass Wings" is more than just a visual statement; it is a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and the beauty that emerges from taking the time to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Junk and Disorderly Disclaimer:
I am in the business of Junk, old unused items people are going to throw away. My joy as a recreator is to wave my magic shiny wand and transform them into something I am proud to send out my door. It must be said though, that there is nothing perfect in the old (sorry mum) - if you look closely, you are going to find rust, scratches or the odd ugly backside as I endeavour to do my best in a sustainable way. With upcycling, must come the understanding that these come to you flawed. like the sediment in an old wine, or a tarnished old coin from years ago. Enjoy the old and celebrate our flaws, old or new! Thanks MSM.

Back Up Bird, with Her Sunglass Wings
My Shiny Perspective:
This is the second piece in a series with a couple of exciting techniques I have been using. Everything is, of course, repurposed. The canvas, the broken mirror, and the old nail polish give the bright, vibrant colours. The canvas is layered with oil and resin to give the light an opportunity to bounce off the colour—so depending on which angle it hits, the colours will either dim or shimmer. The tiny slices of metallics for the trunk are actually taken from the plastic I put down on the ground as a drop sheet for painting that had dried up and was perfect to cut and glue. This jigsaw has the challenge I set for myself of only using the pieces of glass I have, to make them fit without cutting them. Yes, it took a lot of time and patience, but “Back Up Bird, with her sunglass wings,” was happy that I took the time. Big shout out to my daughter, who is an artist herself, lending me her eye to align the wings. Mwaahh
