Artist Concept:
"To Sir with Love" is a functional lampshade sculpture, meticulously crafted from discontinued 5-cent pieces, paua shells, and an old lampshade. The piece embodies the concept of value, both in terms of currency and cultural significance. The 5-cent pieces, no longer in circulation, represent a bygone era, while the paua shells, known for their iridescent beauty, bring a touch of New Zealand’s natural heritage into the work. The repurposed lampshade not only serves as a functional object but also as a symbol of how we can breathe new life into everyday items that have outlived their original purpose.
Junk and Disorderly Disclaimer:
I am in the business of Junk, old unused items people are going to throw away. My joy as a recreator is to wave my magic shiny wand and transform them into something I am proud to send out my door. It must be said though, that there is nothing perfect in the old (sorry mum) - if you look closely, you are going to find rust, scratches or the odd ugly backside as I endeavour to do my best in a sustainable way. With upcycling, must come the understanding that these come to you flawed like the sediment in an old wine, or a tarnished old coin from years ago. Enjoy the old and celebrate our flaws, old or new! Thanks MSM.

My Shiny Perspective:
This sculpture is a unique blend of currency and craftsmanship, where the obsolete meets the timeless. The shiny, reflective surfaces of the 5-cent pieces contrast with the natural, organic beauty of the paua shells, creating a piece that is as visually striking as it is thought-provoking. "To Sir with Love" isn’t just a lampshade—it’s a statement about value, heritage, and the endless possibilities of upcycling. The fact that it is still functional adds an extra layer of intrigue, making it a perfect example of how art can seamlessly blend with everyday life.
