Artist Concept:

"World Uncertain" is a testament to the transformative power of upcycling and the complex interplay of emotions. Early in my community-led upcycling journey, I was gifted five boxes of medical supplies. This serendipitous gift sparked a fascination with creating faces and expressions from disused items, leading to the creation of "World Uncertain."

The piece captures a full range of emotions and uncertainties, embodying both bravery and vulnerability. It features porcelain jandals given to me years ago by a fellow artisan at the Mt Eden Craft Fair, and various upcycled elements including a cane mirror, keychains, padlocks, and old Christmas lights. Each component carries a personal history and significance, contributing to the intricate narrative of the work.

Junk and Disorderly Disclaimer:

I am in the business of Junk, old unused items people are going to throw away.  My joy as a recreator is to wave my magic shiny wand and transform them into something I am proud to send out my door.  It must be said though, that there is nothing perfect in the old (sorry mum) - if you look closely, you are going to find rust, scratches or the odd ugly backside as I endeavour to do my best in a sustainable way.  With upcycling, must come the understanding that these come to you flawed.  like the sediment in an old wine, or a tarnished old coin from years ago.  Enjoy the old and celebrate our flaws, old or new!  Thanks MSM.

  • My Shiny Perspective:

Early on my community-led upcycling journey, I was gifted five boxes of medical supplies (see Felicity's page). After making Felicity, I became captivated by the idea of creating faces and expressions from simple disused items. Thus, World Uncertain was born.

It's challenging to pinpoint exactly what he's thinking—a full range of emotions and fear-based uncertainties make him simultaneously brave and vulnerable. The beautiful porcelain jandals (right foot only, haha) were given to me years ago when I used to sell my wares at the Mt Eden Craft Fair. It was an amazing experience with a bunch of wonderful people, some of whom became lifelong friends.

Tim, who had the stall next to mine and could make incredible origami flowers, gave me the jandals. They stayed in my cupboard for 12 years, obviously waiting for me to morph into an upcycle hoarder (I mean artist)! Thanks, Tim!

The piece includes an upcycled cane mirror and keys. I'm pretty sure his mouth is a small wooden peg used to close a herb packet. Padlocks and his eyes are old Christmas lights
